Maulana Hakeem Barkaat Ahmed Bugvi
1927 - 1999
Maulana Barkaat Ahmed Bugvi was a qualified Hakeem and practiced Tibyaat in Bhera. He also served as teacher and scholar in Darul Uloom Azizia. He actively participated in the movement of Khatam e Nabuwat in 1953 AD. He was confined and jailed because of his active participation in the movement. He was elected as municipal commissioner Bhera in the first local body elections of 1954 AD. He served as Nazim of Majlis Hizb ul Ansar and was president of various prominent organizations such as Tibiyaa Committee Bhera, Anjuman Bhera, Tehreek Khatam e Nabuwat 1974 AD committee. He also served as Nazim of well wishers of Jamaat Islami Bhera.
Hakeem Abdul Majeed Saifi
1900 - 1960
Hakeem Abdul Majeed Saifi participated in the Khilafaat movement and formed the district Shahpur committee with Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi. He was one of the founder members of Majlis Hizb ul Ansaar and a capable Hakeem. He was a student of Maulana Hakeem Abdul Rasool Bakharvi. He formed the Maktaba Saadia and Mataab Saifi in Bhera. He was the son in law of Maulana Habibullah Amritsari. He was an excellent Hakeem, prescription writer and ailment healer. He was also a writer and has notable works to his credit.
Maulana Habibullah Amritsari
1898 - 1948
Maulana Habibullah Amritsari was born in a trading Kashmiri family. He was a student of Mufti Muhammad Hassan Amritsari who was founder of Jamia Ashrafia. He was associated and travelled with Maulana Sanaullah Amritsari. He was a disciple of Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi. He was an active campaigner against Qadyaniyat and resigned from his government job when the qadyani agenda was enforced on him. He was an extensive writer with more than 16 books arguing against the qadyani philosophy.
Hakeem Zulqarnain Kashmiri Amritsari
1928 - 2006
Hakeem Zulqarnian was a qualified Hakeem who obtained his skills from Hakeem Abdul Majeed Saifi. He started his Mataab in Bhera and later shifted it to Lahore. He produced medicines of high quality to treat the ailments of his patients. He published the magazine Anees ul Farbaa for the information of students and patients. He was an active office bearer of Majlis Alahraar Lahore in the Tehreek Khatam e Nabuwat and was jailed in Lahore Fort for his political activities. He was an admirer of Syed Attaullah Shah Bukhari, Maulana Abu ul Kalaam Azad, Chaudhary Fazal Haq, Ahmed Shujabadi and Shoorash Kashmiri.
Hafiz Sahibzada Mehboob ur Rasool
1910 - 1971
Hafiz Sahibzada Mehboob ur Rasool was the son of Pir Abdur Rasool of Naqashbandi Khanqah of Lillah Sharif. He was a literary, well read, moderate and peaceful scholar of Islam. He was a great admirer of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi. He had a great mind and memory and was an active and practical individual. He was disciplined and social giving respect to all scholars and school of thoughts.
Maulana Khalid Masood
1935 - 2003
Maulana Khalid Masood belonged to a literary and spiritual family of Lillah Sharif. He did his MSc Chemistry degree from the University of Punjab and started government job in the industrial ministry. He became associated with Jamaat Islami during his study at Islamia Collage and also served as Nazim Aaala. He obtained Diploma in chemical engineering from Kings College London. He did MA Islamiat from Punjab University. He became a student of Maulana Ameen Ahsan Islahi in 1958 AD and remained his disciple throughout his life. He was one of the closest and dearest student of Maulana Islahi. He retired as research officer from Quaid e Azam Library from the post of research officer in 1996 AD. He conducted research, writing and dissemination of various books, magazines and articles. His notable work is the book Hayat Rasool Umi on the life history of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.
Syed Hameed Hussain
The graduates of Muslim University Ali Garh who resided in Bhera used to write the acronym B.A (Alaig) with their names. One of them was Syed Hameed Hussain. He came to Bhera after partition of the sub-continent and remained here till his return to the Almighty. He always spoke Urdu and wore the Jinnah Cap. Till his end he remained true to the All India Muslim League and did not join any other faction, branch or group of dissidents. He came forward as leader of the Muhajreen in Bhera at the time of elections in 1954 AD when the local elections were being held and the independent opposition group of Bhera was being formed under leadership of Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi and Sheikh Muhammad Aslam Kamboh. He was nominated as a candidate nominated by Ameer Hizb ul Ansar and became an elected member. However later the Fazal Haq Paracha group caused fracture in the group and one of the members who separated from the independent opposition group was Syed Hameed Hussain. However, he gained prominence as the editor of the weekly magazine Darra in Bhera which was formed chiefly to target and malign the political opponents. The weekly magazine Darra was infamous for its character assassination, disregard of services and the Jamia Masjid administrators. The language, tone and writings of the magazine passed the criteria of ethics, journalistic standards and general politeness. Another journalist in response to Syed Hameed named Hafiz Ghulam Yasin issued the weekly Paposh which was on an equal footing with Darra in terms of culture and politeness. The situation and conflict aggravated to such an extent that Syed Hameed was not only targeted verbally and written form but also physically. Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi intervened and helped in resolving the conflict between the parties. Maulana Bugvi always met him with cordiality, respect and tolerance whenever the occasion arose.
Alam Din Momin (Alaig)
1910 - 2003
The Late Alam Din Momin was born in Bhera 1910 AD. His quest for knowledge took him to Muslim University Ali Garh where he did his BA. He was an educationist and retired as Head Master in 1967 AD. He was a disciplined, vocal, polite and soft spoken teacher who engaged his students actively. He incorporated general knowledge and other subjects in his lectures. He did his share of tasks and work completely and on time. He preferred team work and was a disciplined individual. He was the last person in Bhera who liked and wore the Turkish Cap. He was well dressed, clean shaven and liked to do his work with his own efforts, never being a burden or dependent on others. He was careful in speech, spending, eating and voicing conflict. He was a friend of Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi and after retirement spent his time in the company of Maulana from Asar till Maghreb prayers. He served as Head Master of Bugvia Islamia High School on its takeover and remained associated with the school throughout his life as teacher, advisor and administrator. His other relations with Hizb ul Ansar, Dar ul Uloom Azizia and Masjid Bugvia also remained strong. His association, commitment and friendship with Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi was exemplary.
Mian Ahmed Din
1911 - 1987
Mian Ahmed Din was the eldest son of Mian Fazal Karim from Jhawrian. He was the brother of Mian Abdur Raheem and Commander Ahmed Noor. He was a friend, companion and well-wisher of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi, Maulana Muhammad Yahya Bugvi, and Maulana Abdul Aziz Bugvi. The family connections were also complemented with travel journeys together and social work. He was active in politics and did social work in Jhawrian. He made farming and agriculture his source of livelihood. Mian Ahmed Din was upright, humorous, social, friendly and caring towards his family and circle of influence. He spent considerable time in company with the Ulema of the Bugvi family and observed, learnt from their character, personality and social behavior.
Hakeem Irani Sahib
Died 1998
Hakeem Irani Sahib real name was Niaz Ahmed or Muhammad Niaz. He maintained his residence in Mohallah Sahianwala in Sohni Laal. He was involved in the field of pharmacy however knew a lot about Hikmat, Tib, Sanyas and Videk. He had also completed Dars e Nizami and was also a teacher to several students. He had a special literary and heart felt association with Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi. He was a serious and learned speaker and scholar. He was also the personal doctor of Maulana Bugvi and his family. He was very much interested and concerned about the organizations of Majlis Hizb ul Ansar, Dar ul Uloom Azizia and Jamia Masjid Bugvia.
Hazrat Pir Badar ul Ameer Gilani
Pir Badar ul Ameer Gilani was head of the Gilani family in Bhera. He had respect and love for Islam, the Last Prophet (Pbuh), Islamic teachings and values and had a close link with the institutes of Hizb ul Ansar. He was a model of decency, simplicity and respect. He worked for the projects pertaining to social and Islamic values in collaboration with the Bugvi family. He participated in the Khatam e Nabuwat campaign of 1953 in association with Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi. He spent a number of months in the prison for his active campaign. He was one of the founder members of Bhera political independent group and was in alliance with the nominee candidates of Khateeb Jamia Masjid Bhera.
Paracha Chaudhary Family
The Paracha family of Bhera is well known and one of its branch are the Paracha Chaudhary family. The respected men and women family members have a close family, social, religious and welfare work relationship with the Bugvi family, Jamia Masjid Bugvia and Majlis Hizb ul Ansar. Chaudhary Fazal Ahmed Paracha s/o Chaudhary Ghulam Ahmed Paracha and his respected wife were recognized as family members of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi and Maulana Naseer ud Din Bugvi. The Late Mrs. Paracha was foster mother of Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi. The Maulana always visited her for her good wishes as an obedient and caring son. The other family members and brothers having connection with Bugvi family were Chaudhary Muhammad Baksh Paracha, Chaudhary Ehsan Elahi Paracha, Chaudhary Basheer Ahmed Paracha, Chaudhary Riaz Ahmed Paracha.
Khawaja Mehta Family
One of the most well-known family branch of Khawjagaan of Bhera is the Mehta family. The family is associated with trade and business which was spread across East and West Pakistan. Khawaja Muhammad Saeed Mehta s/o Khawaja Fazal Din Mehta was the patron of Anjuman Islamia Bhera. This organization formed the first Muslim primary school in Bhera. The support of Saeed Mehta Sb and his son Khawaja Muhammad Zahoor Mehta has always been with the Bugvi family. They have continuously supported Jamia Masjid Bugvia, Shams ul Islam Magazine, Hizb ul Ansar through social and financial support. They have ensured that some amount on the return of their property in Bhera is provided to the mosque and madrassah. The maternity hospital and chest clinic were established by the Mehta family in Bhera where the staff, building and machinery have been serving the people for the past 50 years. Khawaja Abdul Sami Mehta a prominent member of the family maintained interest in the social work in Bhera. He also helped and supported Majils Hizb ul Ansar in its activities and work.
Syed Tasadduq Hussain Shah
Syed Tasadduq Hussain Shah was eldest son of Nadir Hussain Shah and a prominent scholar in his family. He performed government service after graduation. He had a vast literary intellect and had a well-rounded, mature personality. He was one of the friends and close associate of Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi. Despite the difference in sect he was far away from narrowmindedness and exhibited patience, rationale and logic in his long academic sessions with Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi.
Maulana Saeed ur Rehman Alvi
1946 - 1996
Maulana Saeed ur Rehman Alvi was born to Maulana Muhammad Ramzan Alvi in 1946 AD Bhera. He studied the Quran from his grandfather Hafiz Ghulam Yasin in Dar ul Uloom Azizia. He had his initial schooling in Bugvia Islamia Primary school. Later he joined Khair ul Madaras in Multan and Siraaj ul Uloom Sargodha. After his completion of studies in 1966 AD he performed teaching and khitabat at Rawalpindi, Attock, Silanwali, Sargodha and Lahore. He joined Tanzeem Islami of Dr. Israr Ahmed in 1984 AD. He remained part of Anjuman Khudam ul Quran and editor of monthly magazine ‘Misaaq’ issued from Lahore. He had an independent and straight forward personality. He translated many Islamic publications and his association with Jamia Masjid Bugvia, Majlis Hizb ul Ansar and magazine Shams ul Islam remained strong through his lifetime. In the later part of his life he served as khateeb Shadman Colony mosque. He passed away in 1996 and was buried in Bhera. He has three sons Saif ur Rehman, Khalil ur Rehman and Jaleel ur Rehman who are all Hafiz Quran like their father and grandfather.
Maulvi Hakeem Shah Muhammad Sheikh Puri

Bhera is not only recognized for its scholars and philosophers but is famous due to its professionals of Tib and Hikmat. One such family of skilled individuals resided in Mouza Sheikh Pur near Bhera. The two sons of Mian Syed Muhammad, Hakeem Maulvi Allah Din and Hakeem Maulvi Muhammad Din were famous healers and practioners of Tib. Both the brothers were students of Allama Qazi Ahmed ud Din Bugvi. Maulvi Hakeem Muhammad Shah on the directions of his father remained a student of Dar ul Uloom Azizia and obtained religious learning. Along with the ability to diagnose and treat ailments he had the knowledge to debate philosophy, ideas, logic and rationale in a moderate and humorous manner. His lifestyle was simple and consisted of white qameez, shawl and pagri. He also took keen interest in politics and chaired the Jalsa of 1930 AD at Anjuman Islamia school where the Bhera chapter of All India Muslim League was formed. The decision was taken in the Jalsa to appoint Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi as president of the chapter. Hakeem Shah Muhammad Sheikh Puri was one of the vice presidents. He passed away in January 1985 AD and was succeeded by his son Hakeem Haji Muhammad Ali who possessed similar character traits of simplicity and politeness. At present the grandsons Hakeem Mian Abdul Ali and Hakeem Mian Abdul Wali are following the practice of Tib as successors to their elders.
Hazrat Zaheer Aqil Shahi

Hazrat Zaheer Aqil Shahi was a prominent writer, scholar and aalim of Mysore. He contributed his articles and scholarly thoughts to monthly magazine Shams ul Islam for an extended period of time. He passed away in April 1937 AD. His obituary written by Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi in Shams ul Islam highlighted his services, contributions for the service of Islam. He prayed for the aalim of Mysore and appealed for support of the deceased family as he had spent all his worldly belongings for the service of Islam.
Malik Saleem Bhatti
1913 - 1992
Muhammad Feroz Din was one of the most prominent teachers in Bhera. He did his matriculation from Government High School Bhera. Passed higher education qualifications from Punjab University and Allahabad University. He was an expert and scholar in Farsi, Urdu and Punjabi. He was highly skilled and proficient in these mediums. He joined government service and for a long time taught matriculation students Urdu and Farsi at the main branch Bhera school. He retired in 1971 AD. He expressed himself in Persian, Urdu and Punjabi poetry. His writing style and calligraphy was very intricate and appealing. He remained associated with Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi and Bugvia Islamia High school. He also remained associated with Sahibzada Lamaat Ahmed Bugvi in establishing Merry Land School Bhera and served as principal for a brief period. He died in February 1992 and was buried in Bhera.
Gilani Family
The Gilani family is one of the earliest religious and spiritual group of individuals. The family represented the Muslims of Bhera and Sargodha in the British court and office. At the time most of the Muslims were alienated and did not have access to the rulers. During the 19th century gradually the Bugvi family of Bhera, Hakeem’s of Sheikhpur, Parachas, Khawjagaan, Mufti family joined the Gilani family as leaders and representatives of the Muslims of the region. Pir Meraan Subhan Shah Gilani is considered as the founder of the family. Pir Shahab ud Din and Pir Haider Shah Gilani were compatriots of Qazi Allama Ahmed ud Din Bugvi. Pir Ameer Gilani was honorary magistrate. His son was Pir Zulfiqar Ali Gilani. Pir Muhammad Khan Pir Gilani was compatriot of Maulana Abdul Aziz Bugvi. Pir Anwar Ameer Gilani was invited to central meetings of Hizb Ul Ansar and presided over the proceedings. Pir Badshah bin Ameer Gilani was patron of Anjuman Islamia Bhera and compatriot of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi. Pir Ghulam Jilani Gilani, Pir Mehboob Shah Gilani, Pir Shams ul Ameer Gilani had a lifelong sincere relationship with the Bugvi family. Pir Taj ul Ameer Gilani was a learned person. He along with Pir Shamsul Islam Gilani studied at Dar ul Uloom Azizia and were mature and intellectual personalities. Prominent members of the Gilani family are Pir Zulfiqar Ali Gilani, Pir Muhammad Chan Pir Gilani, Pir Anwar Ameer Gilani and Pir Badshah bin Ameer Gilani.
Maulvi Muhammad Azhar Bhervi
1873 - 1951
Maulvi Muhammad Azhar Bhervi was a student of Maulana Ghulam Rasool Chavi. He was a poet, scholar, writer and a distinguished personality. He passed his scholarly journey in Silsala Naqashbandia. He wrote poetry in Punjabi about religious and national movements. He was a well-wisher of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi and a helper in Majlis Hizb ul Ansar. He was involved in teaching and learning in Haji Gulab mosque in Bhera. He also participated in a famous debate with Mirzais where the panel of Islamic scholars was headed by Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi. His sons Maulana Hafiz Muhammad Ramzan Aftab lives in Hyderabad Sindh and Maulana Ehsan Elahi is Khateeb at Masjid Tahli Wala, Main Bazaar Bhera. Both are graduates from Dar ul Uloom Azizia and members of Majlis Hizb ul Ansar. Maulana Azhar Bhervi passed away in September 1951 AD.
Sheikh Muhammad Aslam Kamboh
Died 1970
A prominent member of the Kamboh family who participated actively in the 1953 prophet hood campaign. Sheikh Muhammad Aslam was always in the front rows of workers and achievers during the Khatam Nabuwat movement events in Bhera under the leadership of Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi. He was one of the five people who were arrested for their protest during the movement in Bhera 1953 AD under the safety act. He remained part of Hizb ul Ansar and was nominated as the leader of the independent opposition political group Bhera. He was elected president as the municipality of Bhera. He was also successfully elected during the local elections of 1957 AD. He was a humanitarian, friend, Islamic thinker and a leader of the people. He was an extremely loyal friend and a person willing to sacrifice everything on instructions of Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi. He passed away in 1970 AD and has two sons Sheikh Zahoor Aslam and Sheikh Khalid Aslam.
Maulana Muhammad Baksh Muslim B.A.
1887 - 1987
The Maulana was born in February 1887 AD and was an independent and moderate scholar. His speeches not only contained passages from English books but also Punjabi poetry verses read lyrically. He was a close friend of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi. He actively participated in the activities of Majlis Hizb ul Ansar and gave speeches at the annual central meeting. He also wrote in magazine Shams ul Islam. He participated in various religious and national movements through his lifetime. He worked at Muslim Masjid at outer Lahori Gate and has his burial place in the Lahore.
Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Hanif (Kot Momin)
1903 - 1973
The Maulana was the son of Muhammad Siddique Gondal born in 1903 AD. He memorized the Quran at an early age and obtained Islamic education from various madrassahs. He obtained spiritual guidance from Late Ahmed Din Qadri of the Silsala Shah Suleman Noori of Bhalwal. He worked as Khateeb and teacher at his family madrassah and not only guided students but the community as well. He was inspired by the dynamism, knowledge and charismatic personality of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi. The name of Maulana Muhammad Hanif as a well-wisher and ardent supporter of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi is at the forefront. He travelled by train to the annual Jalsa of Majlis Hizb ul Ansar every year and gave his speech in the first session. Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi and Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi used to travel to Kot Momin for propagation of Islam where they were always well received and provided with help. He remained one of the earliest examiner at Dar ul Uloom Azizia and also wrote frequently for Shams ul Islam. He had an impressive, soft and caring personality and always used a humble polite tone. He was a close associate of the Bugvi family and one who was trusted with confidence and asked for advice whenever a critical time befell Bhera, Bugvi Family and the institutes. His advice was much valued and held in high esteem. He passed away in June 1973 AD.
Maulana Muhammad Rafique (Sargodha)
Born 1925
Maulana Muhammad Rafique was born in 1925 AD in Jhawrian. On the advice of his elders after studying initially at home he joined Dar ul Uloom Azizia, Bhera. Under the administration of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi and the supervision of teachers such as Maulana Muhammad Hussain Shouq, Maulana Mushtaq Ahmed Jalandhari and Mufti Siah ud Din Kaka Khel he completed his Dars e Nizami course. He obtained Honors in Arabic from Punjab University. He did teaching and khitabat in Lahore and Chakwal. His unique way of giving the Dars Quran was much appreciated. He taught at Jamia High School Sargodha and retired in 1987 AD. He remained Khateeb of the government college Sargodha mosque for 10 years. Maulana Muhammad Rafique can be considered as one of the most brilliant students of the Dar ul Uloom. He not only had command over expression in Urdu prose but poetry as well. He had sincere and effective relations with Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi as well as Hakeem Barkat Ahmed Bugvi. He visited Bhera regularly during summer and was a guest of the Bugvi Family. He had a decent, patient and extremely kind personality and held high values near his heart.
Maulana Muhammad Ramzan Alvi
1920 - 1990
Maulana Muhammad Ramzan Alvi was the son of Hafiz Ghulam Yasin born in Bhera 1920 AD. He studied under the guidance of worthy teachers of Dar ul Uloom Azizia and had direction from Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi at an early age. He joined the Army as Aalim Khateeb and remained in service for 20 years. He took spiritual guidance from Maulana Muhammad Abdullah Ludhianvi of Khanqah Sharif Kundian. Maulana Muhammad Ramzan Alvi was an avid reader and his collection of books were utilized by his circle of friends. He shifted to Rawalpindi in 1961 AD. He participated in the construction of the mosque at Gulshanabad and also became its first Khateeb. He maintained the Islamic mosques in the true traditions of Islam teaching young and old. He aimed at building a community around the mosque which was united, caring and peaceful towards each other. He was a person who took care and regard of past relations. He had a selfless personality who was always concerned for the welfare of others. His acumen and memory were extremely developed. He read the Quran consecutively a number of times during Taraweeh for more than 50 years. Performed Hajj with his father. The Maulana was inspired and influenced by the administration of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi and the atmosphere at Dar ul Uloom Azizia through his association. He died in a road accident in 1990 AD and was buried in Bhera next to his father.
Qazi Muhammad Siddique
1902 - 1967
Qazi Muhammad Siddique is considered as one of the most brilliant and learned expert of education from Bhera. He was the son of respected teacher of Bhera Hafiz Nizam ud Din Saroba. Hafiz Nizam ud Din remained the first teacher of Hifz and Imam at Dra ul Uloom Azizia under it was under administration of Maulana Muhammad Yahya Bugvi and Nazim Hakeem Mukhtar Ahmed Bugvi. Qazi Muhammad Siddique was born in Bhera 1902 AD. He completed his matriculation from Bhera and then served in Lahore as senior English teacher. He played an active role in the adult literacy program of 1930 AD and many residents of Bhera gained benefit from his efforts. He became Head Master of Government High School Bhera in 1950 AD. He was very attached and affiliated to his hometown Bhera and after retirement made Bhera his abode. Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi asked his advice and opinion in various matters pertaining such as start of Islamia High school and its takeover. He improved the performance of Anjuman Islamia High School Bhera as principal in charge. He passed away in September 1967 AD.
Muhammad Zia ur Rahman Saifi
Died 1986
Maulana Zia ur Rahman was a learned scholar, khateeb and a pious individual of Bhalwal. He was a self-made and independent human being who made his own way through life. He was disciplined, serving the poor and an activist in the region. He associated with Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi in the Khatam Nabuwat Tehreek in 1974 AD. He was made deputy convener of the Tehreek and also served as General Secretary of Tehreek Nizam Mustafa of Sargodha. He was not only a great benefactor for his friends but also did not do harm to his enemies. He was sincere, moderate, moderate and a good advisor to his literary and social work colleagues. He participated in the 1985 election as a candidate. He was cautious in forming an opinion but once established was quick to act fearlessly on his decisions. He had a wide circle of friends whom he treated with patience and consideration despite callousness from a number of close friends.
Maulana Hakeem Muhammad Alam
1913 - 1986
The Maulana was born in a village Chamoo of District Gujrat to Hafiz Noor Alam who was a well-wisher of Muhammad Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi. He was class fellow of Maulana Sultan Mahmood of Gujrat and a sincere worker of Majlis Hizb ul Ansar. He took admission in Dar ul Uloom Azizia on the instructions of his father and completed his education with peers and class fellows such as Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi, Maulana Khan Muhammad Kundian Sharif, Maulana Muhammad Ramzan Alvi. He completed his study of Hadith from Madrassah Aminia Delhi from Maulana Khuda Buksh Lillahi and Mufti Kifayatullah Dehlvi. He took up Tib and Hikmat as a career and started his practice. The associated tasks of agriculture and Hikmat complemented his religious services. He visited Bhera twice or thrice every year and had a smiling face with humorous personality. His stay was associated with gathering of friends, humor and liveliness. His friendship and regard for the Bugvi family was very high to the extent that he named his children after the great elders of the Bugvi family. The efforts of Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi to launch Bhera High school were supported by Maulana Hakeem Muhammad Alam through his family connections with Mirza Ijaz Baig. His support, advice and help was available to the Bugvi family in its endeavors and plans.
Maulvi Chaudhary Mian Khan
1917 - 1999
The Chak 03 on Bhera Bhalwal Road was the abode of a religious land owner family from Kharian, Gujrat. Maulvi Mian Khan was born to Mehar Dad Chaudhary in 1917 AD. He completed his early education and was a frequent visitor to the yearly Jalsa and speeches of the Bugvi family. His families link with Islam and early education brought his close to the Ulema. He had the opportunity to observe, listen and interact with Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi during various movements occurring in Bhera. He was strongly influenced and moved by the association and direction of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi to work for the cause and services of Islam. He received a direction to associate himself with Dar ul Uloom Azizia. At the time educational books were in Arabic, Urdu and Farsi and were not easy to obtain or to follow hence Maulana Bugvi formed a shorter course focusing on the Quran and its comprehension. The course was followed by Maulvi Muhammad Khan for about two years. He returned to his village and along with cultivation formed a mosque where he started Dars Quran. His association with the Bugvi family, Majlis Hizb ul Ansar, Shams ul Islam, Dar ul Uloom Azizia was one which was unbroken and unshakeable through his life. At the annual Jalsa of Majlis Hizb ul Ansar the men and women members of his family made a special effort to attend every year traveling by horse cart. He was an avid and regular reader of Shams ul Islam. He had strong friendly and brotherly ties with Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi. Maulvi Muhammad Khan was also inspired by the writings of Maulana Maoududi and was in agreement with the views of Jamaat Islami. He provided good care and education to his children. The role of Maulvi Muhammad Khan was instrumental in the Shaukat Islam movement of 1970 against the call for socialism by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He passed away in 1999 AD after a brief illness.
Maulana Hafiz Pir Mehdi Hussain Shah
1934 - 1987
One of the close associate, well-wisher and friend of Maulana Bugvi who always worked with honesty and dedication for the services of Islam. He formed a madrassah and center in Chak Khushi and formed an association with Majlis Hizb ul Ansar. He was born in Bhera to Abdul Hadi Shah in 1934 AD. He learnt the Quran and memorized it at an early age. He enrolled in Dar ul Uloom Azizia under guidance and supervision of Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi. He took spiritual oath from Maulana Muhammad Qamar ud Din Sialvi. He completed some part of his education from Jhang and remained scholar, educationist and khateeb at Chak Khusi, Kallar Kahaar and Chakwal. He had the honor to perform Hajj five times. He was a very close friend and student of Maulana Bugvi and invited him to Chak Khushi as a guest. A large number of his students and respectful followers reside around Chak Khushi. He passed away in April 1987 AD.
Maulana Professor Abdul Hayee Bin Maulana Muhammad Rafique Bhartavi
Born 1906
Professor Abdul Hayee was born in 1906. His educational journey started from home and took him to completion of BSc from Jammu Kashmir and MA Arabic from Punjab University. He started his Government service from Shah Pur High School. He was transferred to Government college Sargodha and spent the remaining portion of his service here. He also became Vice Principal and retired in Sargodha. The family tree of the Bugvi Family indicates the relationship of Maulana Professor Abdul Hayee with Maulana Hashim Bugvi 1680 AD of Bugga Sharif. His father was a compatriot and peer of Maulana Ghulam Muhammad Bugvi and Maulana Abdul Aziz Bugvi.
Khawaja Hakeem Abdul Ghani Alaig
1911 - 2001
Khawaja Hakeem Abdul Ghani belonged to the Hakeem branch of the Khawaja family of Bhera. He was born in 1930 AD in a traditional land owner family. His education took place in Government High school, Bhera and completed his BA from Ali Garh University. Prominent personalities such as Alim Din Momin, Syed Hameed Hussain, Syed Ehsan Qadir Shah Advocate, Hakeem Haji Khawaja Ehsan Elahi were his compatriots and class fellows at Ali Garh University. He started Government service but left it to return to live in Mohalla Khawjagaan in Bhera. His grandfather had wished to provide some part of his land revenue to be spent on repair and maintenance of mosques in Bhera which included Jamia Masjid Bhera. He undertook and performed this responsibility with care and commitment. He was one of the close associates of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi and was a person of sensible and honest opinion and advice. Khawaja Hakeem Abdul Ghani passed away in November 2001 AD.
Maulana Qazi Abdul Qadir
1916 - 1986
Maulana Qazi was born in 1916 AD and after initial study of the Quran went to Qazi Atta Muhammad of Khushab for completion of Nazra Quran. Went to school and also read books from Maulana Muhammad Rafique Bhartavi. He took admission to Dar ul Uloom Azizia on the direction of Maulana Bhartavi. He completed his education from Dar ul Uloom Azizia under the guidance of the able teachers. He completed the study of Hadith from Jamia Aminia Delhi in 1939 AD from Maulana Khuda Buksh Lillahi and Maulana Kifayatullah Dehlvi. His meeting with Maulana Muhammad Ilyas of Tableeghi Jamaat in Delhi was a life changing moment. He took spiritual oath from Maulana Shah Abdul Qadir Rai Puri in 1943 AD. After the death of Maulana Rai Puri in 1964 he formed association with Maulana Muhammad Zakariya. His activities related to service of Islam, tours, speeches and association with other leaders of the locality. Despite his busy schedule and work he always took time to remember Bugvi family and the institutes of Hizb ul Ansar and maintained his relationship with them. He remained active as khateeb of Masjid Umer at Jhawarian and did social welfare work for the people. His family has followed in his footsteps and continue to serve Islam as khateebs, scholars and administrators.
Doctor Syed Fazal Qadir Shah
1914 - 1960
The grandfather of Doctor Syed Fazal Qadir Shah was Maulvi Muhammad Hussain Ahmedabadi who was a poet and scholar in Persian. He was also a poet and wrote verses in Persian, Urdu and Punjabi. His outhouse in Ghas Mandi, Bhera was a meeting place for poets and literary scholars. His father Abdul Qadir Shah memorized the Quran and completed his studies from his father and Jamia Masjid Bhera. He completed a course in dispensary and worked at various dispensaries of District Shah Pur. Doctor Fazal Qadir Shah was his eldest son. He completed his early education and dispensing course from Civil Hospital Sargodha. He initially performed government service but formed his allopathy practice in Bhera Main Bazaar near Laloo Wala Gate. He was one of the oldest and experienced allopathic doctor at that time in Bhera. His treatment for reduction in high fever due to malaria was very much popular and recognized as an effective cure. He was a progressive, independent and free thinker. He participated in the politics of Muslim League Bhera but largely remained distant from local level politics. He was a well-wisher and supporter in the endeavors of Hizb ul Ansar and Jamia Masjid Bhera. He passed away in 1988 AD and was buried in Bhera.
Maulana Hafiz Fazal Kareem Gondal Naqshbandi Mujadadi
1898 - 1980
The family of the Maulana has been residing in Bhera for ten generations. He was born in 1898 AD and memorized the Quran from Hafiz Sultan Mehmood in 1910 AD. He passed the Munshi Fazil exam in 1929 AD. He completed his education and degree in Islamic Education from Dar ul Uloom Azizia and also from Jamia Aminia Delhi in 1940 AD. In 1935 AD he took spiritual oath with Sisala Naqshbandi Hazrat Bawa Muhammad Qasim Mohra Sharif, Murree. He taught at Jamia Rizvia, Jhang Bazaar, Faisalabad under Maulana Sardar Ahmed. When the classes for eastern studies were started in Dar ul Uloom Azizia the Maulana joined the institute as lecturer and teacher. When Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi launched Bugvia Islamia High School he was posted as teacher of Arabic and Farsi. He taught at the Khwajagaan Mohallah for a vast number of years. His association was with the pen and book and he had numerous publications to his name. These books are well read and are recognized as important literary efforts. He passed away in January 1980 AD in Bhera.
Sheikh Fazal Haq Paracha
Died 1969
One of the biggest and brightest name in the political history of Bhera is of Sheikh Fazal Haq Paracha. He studied at Government High School Bhera and at Ali Garh University. He returned and took part in active politics from an early age. He remained as member of Bhera Municipality as officer and member. During the period of 1927AD till 1954 AD were years where he was continuously a political administrator and officer of Bhera. He was successful in the elections for All India in 1930 AD and continued to win elections till 1945 AD. In 1945 AD he took part in the United Punjab Election as a candidate of All India Muslim League against the Unionist Party. He had the distinction of being the only candidate to be successful on the Muslim League ticket in Punjab. During partition in 1947 he played a key role in reducing unrest and played a part in saving the life and property of non-Muslims effected by the division of the subcontinent. He was an associate of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi and the Maulana used to visit him occasionally in Bhera. He supported Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi during his movements and campaigns in Bhera and surroundings. His association with the Bugvi family declined after the death of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi. Sheikh Fazal Haq Paracha distinctly opposed and was unsupportive during the Khilafat Movement of 1953 AD in Bhera. He did not participate nor helped the cause of the movement. Due to his disassociation the movement and its members turned into an opposition group in the elections of 1954 AD. This opposition group of Bhera defeated Sheikh Fazal Haq Paracha for the first time since the past 30 years. Sheikh Fazal Haq Paracha passed away in January 1969 AD and is succeeded by his sons Sheikh Ikram ul Haq Paracha, Sheikh Ehsan ul Haq Paracha, Sheikh Anwar ul Haq Paracha, and Inaam ul Haq Paracha.
Doctor Haji Mukhtar Ahmed Awan
Died 1980
The late Haji Mukhtar Ahmed Awan was part of the Awan family from the Bhoon branch and son of Ghulam Ahmed Bin Mulk Attaullah. The maternal side of his family was from Jhawrian. His sister was married in District Khushab and had three sons. One of the sons was Doctor Malik Abdul Hameed who was a teacher and doctor at King Edward Medical College. He was one of the associates and part of Allama Muhammad Iqbal circle of influence. Haji Mukhtar Ahmed Awan was associated to the religious and Islamic scholars of the region because of his Islamic values, his love for the religion and desire to serve the people. He was respectful of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi and was gracious towards Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi and Maulana Umer Bir Balvi. He regularly attended meetings of Majlis Hizb ul Ansar, wrote in Shams ul Islam and was a well-wisher and associate in the good work being done by the Bugvi family. The doctor formed a dispensary in Sardar Pur Noon and served the sick. His name became well known outside Bhalwal in the locality. He had a large family and he took care of the needs of his children with care and devotion. Two of his sons were married to the daughters of Maulana Rasheed Ahmed Bugvi. He died in December 1980 AD.
Abu Shaheen Farooqi
1932 - 1999
Abu Shaheen Farooqi was born in the Sufi family of merchants and to Mian Imam ud Din in 1932 AD. He completed his Quranic study and high school education from Government High school Bhera. He completed his Adeeb Fazil Degree from Punjab University. Through his self and personal ambition, he mastered the English language. He remained as teacher in Anjuman Islamia Primary school. Later he served in Rawalpindi as officer in military accounts. Through history Bhera has remained a center for religion, literature and scholars. Till the end of the 19th century, a printing press operated in Bhera and magazines such as “Qaiser Hind” and “Shams ul Islam” were printed there. The head master of Bhera Government High School also published an English student magazine by the name of Northern Star. In the background of such publications the frequent writer started using the pen name of Abu Shaheen Farooqi. He authored and presented Bhera as a columnist in national publications such as Nawai Waqat, Kohistan, Amrooze, Zamindaar, Zarb Mujahid, Mustaar, Naseem Bahar and Tabassum. He was a journalist who presented news rather than a person who made or solicited news. He remained part of the Sargodha Union of Journalist and formed the Bhera Press Club. He was polite, considerate and conscious of his duties as a journalist. He maintained personal and professional links with important office bearers in Bhera. One of his greatest and most effective piece of writing is History of Bhera where a large number of material and text has been organized. His efforts have been recognized and accolades given by a wide circle of scholars and authors. Abu Shaheen Farooqi was always cognizant and thoughtful while reporting on the activities of Majlis Hizb ul Ansar. Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi visited him at his home and remained his guest on numerous occasions. He took part in the formation of madrassahs and educational centers where he coached students. He passed the career of journalism to his son and passed away in March 1999 AD.
Maulana Bahaa ul Haq Qasmi
Died 1986
Maulana Qasmi was born in a literary and intellectual family of Amritsar. His house was next to a mosque, madrassah and khanqah. His association with Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi and Majlis Hizb ul Ansar started with opposition to the Khaksaar Movement of Allama Mushriqi. His short booklet on the opposition to Khaksaar movement was well written and remained available at the library of Hizb ul Ansar. He was an educationist and a literary person who joined the teaching profession in Amritsar. He wrote articles for a number of magazines and publications. His series of articles and columns on Islam and compromising the belief on unity were published in Shams ul Islam. His views were endorsed by Maulana Manzoor Naumani and Maulana Muhammad Baksh Muslim BA. He actively participated in the seminars of Majlis Hizb ul Ansar and was an active participant till 1970 AD. He used to give his speech on Friday after the Jumma prayers. Due to partition he was homeless and was a guest of Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi for a number of months. His whole and extended family remained a guest at Bhera with Maulana Bugvi. Later he shifted to Wazirabad and subsequently to Model Town, Lahore. He regularly gave the Friday sermon and led the Jumma prayers as long as his health allowed. He remained editor, columnist, writer and honorary editor of Shams ul Islam. For a brief period, part of the work in preparation of the magazine Shams ul Islam was done in Amritsar. The advertisement of his household products and publications used to be published in Shams ul Islam. He was a moderate, independent scholar who worked for the unity of Muslim Ummah. His relations with the Bugvi family and Majlis Hizb ul Ansar remained cordial, sincere and helpful throughout his life. He passed away in Lahore in 1986 AD and was succeeded by his son’s columnist Atta ul Haq Qasmi and poet Zia ul Haq Qasmi.
Maulvi Haji Sufi Muhammad Ali Zahoori
1901 - 1980
Maulvi Sufi Muhammad Ali was born in a village near Shahdara, Lahore in 1901 AD. His elders in the family were affiliated and associated with Maulana Muhammad Zakir Bugvi but Sufi Muhammad Ali established a special bond for Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi. Because of this association he became well known as Zahoori. He obtained his early education in his village and became the imam, khateeb and Nazim of the local mosque and madrassah. He took spiritual oath with Maulana Bugvi and remained a true and sincere compatriot to the Bugvi family. He served the cause of Allah, was fearful of the creator, shared the burden of others and was a simple, dedicated human being. He used to actively participate in the annual seminar and Jalsa of Hizb ul Ansar. He invited the people in his locality to attend the Jalsa and also arranged seminars and speeches inviting the Bugvi Ulema and other scholars. These visits have been carrying out for years for the guidance of the Muslims. He passed away in 1980 AD and was succeeded by four sons.
Maulana Mufti Syed Siah ud Din Kaka Khel
1916 - 1997
The Maulana was born in Ziarat Kaka Khel in 1916 AD to Hakeem Muhammad Saeed Gul. He graduated from Dar ul Uloom Deoband and started serving Islam as a Khateeb and scholar in Kohat. This was the time when the opposition to the Khaksar Tehreek, the Majlis Hizb ul Ansar and Shams ul Islam had become prominent because of their zeal and enthusiasm in protecting Islam in Eastern and Central Punjab. The publications of a few articles of Mufti Syed Siah ud Din Kaka Khel in Shams UL Islam served as the starting point for a fruitful partnership. Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi offered the Maulana a position to teach in the center of learning at Bhera in 1942 AD. The letter of invitation was written with such clarity, sincerity and commitment to the cause of Islam that on the advice of his teacher Maulana Abdul Haq Nafay he readily agreed to join Jamia Masjid Bugvia and Dar ul Uloom Azizia. He was the first teacher at Dar ul Uloom Azizia to be recognized by the title of Mufti. He remained a teacher, scholar, writer, editor, president and member of Majlis Hizb ul Ansar, Dar ul Uloom Azizia, Shams ul Islam throughout his life irrespective of place, time and location. He started teaching at Madrassah Lyallpur in December 1946 and taught thousands of students during his stay. He remained member of Islamic Ideology Council of Pakistan. Sadly he was martyred in a traffic accident with his son in April 1997 AD and is buried in Ziarat Kaka Sahib. Mufti Kaka Khel was gifted with great abilities and ambitions by Allah and he used these well for the service of Islam. He is a beacon in the scholars who viewed the beliefs and ideas of Deoband, Ulema Nadwa, Jamaat Islami, Maulana Moududi and other Muslim scholars and thinkers with moderation and understanding. One of the sincerest advisor and helper of the Bugvi Ulema who was big hearted, compassionate, practiced what he preached, without any mean streak and an immediate responder to help. The Bugvi Ulema wrote numerous letters to him for help and advice which were answered immediately. He was a true and sincere well-wisher of the Bugvi family.
Maulvi Hafiz Sher Muhammad Thatti Noor
Maulvi Hafiz Sher Muhammad was head master of Islamia Vernacular Middle School Thatti Noor near Bhera. He had also received religious education and was well aware of the principles and laws of Islam. He was very respectful and cognizant of the services of Maulana Zahoor Ahmed Bugvi. He used to travel to Bhera for Jumma prayers on his bicycle. Hafiz Sher Muhammad and his son who served the mosque and school at Thatti Noor were followers and helpers in the work of the Madrassah Dar ul Uloom Azizia and Masjid Bugvia. It was a tradition of that time that the annual Jalsa was managed and organized by the students of the High School Tahtti Noor. These students arrived on Thursday at Bhera and returned on Saturday after completion of the Jalsa. He was a regular contributor to Shams ul Islam and read the magazine avidly. He arranged speeches at seminars at least twice a year at Thatti Noor. Sahibzada Lamaat Ahmed Bugvi was a student of Hafiz Sher Muhammad and resided with him in Thatti Noor for some time.
G. R. Ghayour
1937 - 1983
The son of Malik Ghulam Awan was born in December 1937 AD in Bhera. He did his matriculation and MBA and passed the competition exam to enter Government service as Income Tax Officer. He spent most of his days serving the government of Pakistan in Karachi and passed away on duty in October 1983 AD. He was a man with many abilities and good habits. He was a soft hearted, generous, and patriotic human being. He respected Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi very much and during the visits of Maulana Bugvi to Karachi took efforts to help him in his work by sparing time, efforts, help and introducing the institutes of Bhera to generous individuals. He was extremely hospitable and used to treat his guests with extreme kindness, compassion and made his home a place of ease for them. Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Bugvi always remembered G. R. Ghayour in kind wards and used to pray for his success and welfare.
