Introduction

History

The geographical area of Sargodha is the home of the Bugvi Family who are the caretakers of the Sher Shah Jamia Masjid Bugvia in Bhera. Bhera is a historic city with a walled structure having eight gates on the pattern of Walled City Lahore. The city is rich in history, tradition and customs which has seen the passage of time and rulers leaving its impact on its structure and population.

The village of Bugga Sharif in present day district Jhelum is the hometown of the Bugvi family. The spiritual journey of preaching and propagation of Islam in Central Punjab, Indian Subcontinent started from this small and obscure village. The Bugvi family entrusted their small children towards the study and learning of Islamic principles. These young individuals travelled to Madrassah’s in Delhi, Lahore and other localities gaining knowledge and information to benefit the population in their hometowns.

With association and guidance of prominent teachers and scholars they rose to become Imam and leaders of Muslim centers in Lahore, Bhera and Bugga Sharif. The family developed the mosques and Islamic learning centers in these areas. They not only propagated the teachings of Islam but also removed malpractices and misconceptions associated with Islamic principles at the time of British rule under influence of other religions and cultures.

Heritage

Through the history the Bugvi Ulema developed these centers of learning while at the same time taking care of the spiritual, social, medical, financial and educational wellbeing of the population. The organizations of Majlis Hizb ul Ansaar and Al Iftikhar Bugvia Foundation are working in the areas. These organizations have been working for the preservation and uplift of the heritage site for  number of decades.
Sher Shah Jamia Masjid Bugvia traces its origin to the period of the ruler Sher Shah Suri. The mosque was restored and developed in its glory through the hard work, contribution of the students of the Bugvi Ulema and the local population who toiled physically to renovate the grand mosque. The other historical landmarks and tourism locations in the districts of Sargodha, Khushab and Jhelum make this a prospect for a heritage tourism trail envisioned by Punjab Government. The culture, monuments, artefacts and local products are now easily accessible and can be visited through travelling on Lahore – Islamabad M2 motorway. Bhera is midway between Lahore and Islamabad and worth a small detour and stopover during the journey between the two metropolitan cities.
